I’ve been taking my dog, Wilma, a six-year-old schnoodle — half-poodle, half-schnauzer; impossibly sweet, good-natured and affectionate — to a particularly fancy one just off Notting Hill Gate in London for years now, but recently it has become increasingly tricky to find a gap in the groomer’s busy schedule. The other day I glanced over the counter to see that the salon’s appointment book had a single long word scrawled diagonally across the diary’s pages, block-booking whole days at a time.
